Hmong College Prep Academy National Honor Society Takes Part in Polar Plunge Group Raises Over $1,400 for Special Olympics

Members of Hmong College Prep Academy's National Honor Society take part in the Polar Plunge, a benefit on behalf of Special Olympics.
Members of Hmong College Prep Academy's National Honor Society, NHS, recently took part in the 2017 Polar Plunge, an annual fundraising event on behalf of Special Olympics.

"Being that NHS is a new program at HCPA, the Polar Plunge was the group's first service project," stated adviser Morgan McLaughlin. "Students had to solicit donations from friends and families and for every $75 raised, one student would be allowed to take the plunge. I'm very happy to report that enough money was raised so that every NHS member who wanted to plunge was able to do so. Overall, our students were able to raise over $1,400."

Students received Polar Plunge t-shirts and interacted with the Special Olympics staff prior to taking the plunge. An announcer introduced each group prior to entering the water.

"Because the weather has been so warm this year, event organizers were unable to cut a hole in the ice," added Mr. McLaughlin. "Instead, they cut a large rectangle that protruded from shore. Students then had to run into the water, go around a buoy and then return to shore. There were three emergency personnel in the water. One of our students, Eh Soe, ran out to the farthest person and gave him a high five as a thank you for standing in the water all day safe-guarding the plungers. That was great."

Mr. McLaughlin was asked if students were allowed to go home and take the chill off after the event.

"No. Though I'm sure the students would have liked to, they toweled off and headed back to school to finish off fourth period."

Hmong College Prep Academy is located at 1515 Brewster Street in St. Paul, just southeast of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. HCPA will be hosting a new student open house on Wednesday, March 29th from 5 PM to 7 PM. The event will feature tours of the campus as well as meet and greet sessions with academic staff and administration. A free dinner will be served and information on the school's upcoming campus expansion will also be available. For more information about other HCPA programs or directions to the school, interested parents and students can contact us at 651-209-8002 or online at www.hcpak12.org.
