Miss Hmong America 5K Run/Walk

By Amy Paj Tshiab Yaj

Boarding students at hundreds of schools where Minors implements support projects must bring their own food from home, on their weekly treks to their high mountain villages.
At many schools there are shortages of water and boarding students must fetch their own, often from streams reached only over difficult terrain. Bucket challenged, demand for containers is high in the mountains.
Greetings family and friends. As your Miss Hmong America 2017, I humbly invite you to the Miss Hmong America 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles) at Lake Phalen on August 26, 2017.

Before I dig into details regarding the 5K and its purpose, please take a moment to clear your thoughts and steer away from the view point that this is just "another pageant project" rather, it is one of the many projects that are in the works to benefit our health alongside inspire us to help others in need.

In 2013, the opportunity to study abroad in Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore opened my eyes to the existing trials and tribulations, which largely effect many students and families. These countries lacked the simplest resources that we take for granted in the United States such as food, medicine, clean water and clean air. That said, I have partnered with Minors In Asia, a nonprofit organization based here in St. Paul. The organization has over three decades of involvement in supporting Southeast Asian students and families across the world. Minors was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in Mankato, Minnesota in 1984, originally as Minors In Need Of Resettlement, to provide family reunification and related assistance to orphaned and abandoned children in refugee camps in Thailand. They also work with severely impoverished highland ethnic minority communities in Laos and Viet Nam.

The aspiration of this event is to fundraise for the students and families living in Southeast Asia. With this 5K, every registered participant will receive a logo t-shirt and race bib. The top five individuals to finish the race will receive an honorable medal and bragging rights. The race will not be chipped however we will have a large timer on display at the finish line for your convenience.

Children of all ages are welcome to join as long as they are accompanied by an adult. If you plan on bringing a stroller to use during the event, we respectfully ask you to start with the walkers to avoid injuries to yourself, children, and runners. Children 13 years and older are encouraged to register.

Please keep in mind that all the proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk will go to Minors in Asia.

Minors is a St. Paul based tax exempt organization serving the basic needs of Hmong and other highland ethnic minority children in northern Laos and Viet Nam for over three decades. Their projects focus on support for exceptionally impoverished children who are trying to stay in school. Students from remote mountain villages often lack basic necessities and drop out mid school year.

Minors' projects address challenges faced by Hmong and other boarding students in a variety of ways, some sustainable, in a program called 5Basics4Boarders.
