Chassidy Ulia Vang's family was up late celebrating Father's Day at their home in the 200 block of West Maryland Avenue in St. Paul's North End. Around 12:10 am on Monday June 19th shots range out. According to one witness there were about 20 family members gathered at the time. Vang's father, Shawn Vang (23) and his friend Lee Lor (27) were shot, but sustained non life threatening injuries to their backs. Chassidy, however, was shot in the temple, and is still fighting for her life.

The Star Tribune reported, "A neighbor, Dennis Hudson, heard the commotion and the rapid fire of gunshots, then stepped outside to find the girl's father, Shawn Vang holding his daughter and saying, 'Dennis, my baby has just been shot. Call the police.'"

The little girl was shot in the temple and bleeding profusely. She was taken to Regions Hospital and underwent emergency surgery. That afternoon the girl wasn't doing very well, reported the Star Tribune.

Now the police have the difficult task of determining motive. Vang and Lor do not have criminal records. Steven Linders of the St. Paul Police Department said, "Some witnesses cooperated, but there were several others who wouldn't talk." "The police are working very hard, but they can't do this alone."

He added that he doesn't believe the shooting was random and thought there was a connection between the shooter and one or both of the adult victims. The exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.

One neighbor said, "Vang was a good father who loved his kids and that the two [Vang and Lor] were good friends who liked to work on cars together." Vang also has a 6-month and 6-year-old daughter. According to the Pioneer Press.

According to the officer investigating the case, the girl's current condition is protected under HIPA. The family has set up a GoFundMe page and the police are asking for anyone with information to contact the homicide unit at 651-266-5650.

In a Pioneer Press article published Tuesday, June 20th the girl's aunt, Mai Thao described her as stable. "If you're having a bad day, you could come here and she would cheer you up," Thao said.

At the time of this writing Mike Ernster, Public Information Officer for the St. Paul Police Department said Chassidy survived surgery but is still in critical condition "with life threatening injuries." This is over a week after the initial shooting.
